COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chief Mullins was laid to rest on Saturday, Dec. 20 as first responders (from Hinds County Sheriff's Office, Hinds County Department of Emergency Management and volunteer fire departments) united to honor his legacy; the AMR Central Mississippi Honor Guard and covering units ensured a respectful farewell for his family.  WAPT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mississippi Governor’s Mansion was adorned on Dec. 4 with holiday decorations celebrating state K-12 students and educators through the 'A Season of Success' theme; displays featured book-adorned trees and gold nutcrackers that honored local education achievements.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Friends and family gathered in Jackson to celebrate the legacy of former Mississippi ACLU president Crystal Welch, remembered for her love for children and commitment to social justice. Welch died in 2024, and her legacy lives on through community efforts.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • STARBASE Mississippi offers free STEAM instruction for local 5th graders this upcoming spring semester at the 172nd Airlift Wing + program activities include hands-on teamwork and problem solving while the program plans to expand services to 6th through 8th grades.  FOX 40

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Work is underway behind the black fencing at Metrocenter Mall to build a mini city with 600 apartments, a grocery store, a service station, and emergency services (the plan also aims to halt ongoing dumping). Councilman Vernon Hartley noted that developer Chris Jones is leading this effort.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ole Miss beat Tulane 41-10 in its first College Football Playoff game. The Rebels scored a touchdown in 59 seconds and now will face Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day at 7 p.m.  FOX 40
