EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A statewide survey revealed over 6,000 vacancies in public schools including more than 1,000 additional positions lost since last year, and State Auditor Shad White submitted legislation to boost teacher pay & shift funds from administration to classrooms. FOX 40
- ➤ Jackson State University will officially open its presidential search next week after the board approved a new leadership profile that allows interim president Dr. Denise Jones Gregory to apply. The university plans to begin national advertising in January, with applications accepted for eight weeks until March 3. FOX 40

- ➤ The Jackson Fire Department noted that many hydrants are not working after a broken unit was found at Last Call sports bar. Firefighters now carry extra water while JXN Water (mapping hydrant conditions with full coverage expected by 2027) takes charge of repairs. WAPT
- ➤ JXN Water shut off service to nearly 1,800 accounts due to unpaid bills amid a billing crisis that left residents facing high costs for bottled water, while city officials reviewed the utility's proposal for a rate increase. Mississippi Today
- ➤ Greenwood LeFlore Hospital averted closure after a Hinds County court hearing led to an agreement with Medicaid to reduce its immediate recoupment to ($447,000) from $900,000, giving the hospital two months to secure a property bond by Jan. 31. - ➤ Hospital officials and lawmakers reached a tentative agreement to allow Greenwood LeFlore to extend its repayment schedule for $5.5M in Medicaid supplement overpayments, aiming to keep the hospital open in 2026.
