COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thirty-one children flew on Flight 2025 from Jackson to the North Pole where elf volunteers greeted them (this 19-year tradition supports those in need). Nine-year-old Dillon was the first to receive gifts that included a bike, drone, and helmet.  WAPT
  • Two Jackson families who contributed sweat equity will soon move into new Habitat houses in Broadmoor as proceeds from nearly four years of donated goods sales at Habitat ReStore on Stonewall Street helped fund affordable home construction in three counties — six homes have been built this year.  WLBT News

  • A popular Jackson nightclub caught fire overnight and local authorities are investigating the cause as damage assessments begin.  WLBT News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Broadway in Jackson is returning for the 2025-26 season at Thalia Mara Hall with three shows: Chicago the Musical on Mar. 17, Kinky Boots on Apr. 3, and Riverdance 30 – The New Generation on Apr. 22. Season tickets cost $150 with Trustmark support.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mississippi Auditor’s Office posted on Monday that assistant teachers earn less than fast food workers. The report tracked 755 positions and found 6 with lower pay, urging the state to cut administrative spending and boost classroom salaries.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents say the newly opened West Rankin Parkway becomes pitch black at night, creating hazards for drivers and wildlife. Pearl Mayor Jake Windham said lighting improvements are planned for the future — though no timeline has been set.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tuesday morning, Century Club Charities gave a $1 million check to Friends of Children’s Hospital to help improve care for kids at UMMC. The donation builds on nearly $20 million raised since 2013 and will support renovations at Batson Tower and a new teen mental health unit opening in February.  FOX 40
  • Emergency responders urge residents in Jackson to be careful using ladders for holiday decorations, warning that falls can cause serious injuries such as broken limbs and head trauma, and advising people to check cords near trees and houses.  WAPT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local high school football players from 18 schools celebrated at the Capital Region All-Area Luncheon held at the State Capitol, where coach Kris Thigpen and state representatives Fabian Nelson + Stephanie Foster recognized their on-field and community achievements. Thigpen said he hopes to hold the event again next year.  FOX 40
