COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 300 local residents participated in the Brandon Bulldog Red Nose Run on November 22 in Brandon. The event marked a strong community turnout and is set to remain an annual gathering—solidifying local ties.  WLBT News
  • Praise Tabernacle Ministries hosted a Thanksgiving meal Saturday morning to provide hot dinners, hygiene kits, and clothing to unhoused residents in Jackson—organizers who once experienced homelessness said the event brought hope and that they plan more donation events during the holiday season.  WAPT
  • Volunteers from College Hill Baptist Church handed out care packages with personal care items to unhoused residents in Pittman Park from 11 a.m. until noon—aiming to support those in need during the holiday season. Church leaders encouraged anyone who missed the event to reach out if they required assistance.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Redeemer Church bought the former Chastain Middle School property on Manhattan Road through Jackson Public Schools’ Repurposing Initiative—this 21-acre campus will become the new home for The Redeemer’s School and a center for education, recreation, outreach and community services with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for mid-December.  FOX 40
  • Mississippi State University assistant professor Jean-Francois Gout discovered a new asteroid named (826856) Commodorecochran— the first found in the state— by using his backyard telescope in Starkville. He named it after Commodore Shelton Cochran, the first MSU athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, and the Minor Planet Center later confirmed his discovery.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Business leaders in Jackson discussed using an out-of-state consultant to rapidly rehouse homeless residents during a Senate Study Committee meeting Tuesday at the State Capitol—Downtown Jackson Partners’ president Elizabeth Brister detailed that the plan would use about $1.4 million, including $400,000 for the consultant, to cover both housing and wrap-around services, with funding expected from federal and private sources.  FOX 40

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Work on a $59 million mixed-use project called the Flats at Fondren will start in January to bring 234 high-end apartments to the Fondren BID—addressing local demand for quality multi-family housing. Arlington Properties will build the project with 92 one-bedroom, 119 two-bedroom and 23 three-bedroom units—and a new parking garage will offer reserved spaces for tenants.  FOX 40

  • Jackson State won the Soul Bowl, earning its spot in the SWAC Championship Game — the team will now prepare to compete for the conference title.  WLBT News
