Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marcus Ellis drove from Walnut Grove to Jackson to drop off turkeys for Turkey Drive 16 at a Kroger on Interstate 55—donating one turkey in each grandchild's name to help neighbors in need. The drive, now in its 14th year, has provided 1 million meals and supports one in six Mississippians who do not have enough to eat.  WAPT
  • A PETA supporter dressed as a turkey lay on a cutting board in downtown Jackson for an hour and a half at East Capitol — North Congress Streets to spark discussion about changing Thanksgiving traditions. He said he wanted to encourage a Thanks-vegan meal.  WLBT News
  • Food Depot in South Jackson, at the West McDowell Road — Terry Road intersection, will close in early December, leaving dozens of workers without jobs and residents with fewer nearby options for affordable groceries ahead of Thanksgiving. Shoppers worry they will face higher costs and extra travel as the store has served as a crucial resource in the community.  FOX 40
  • Donations totaling nearly $1.5 million are funding the new Margaret Ann Crigler Park at Mississippi and State Streets to remove downtown Jackson blight — the park will have a children's area, stage, and walking trail and will open in May during Maker’s Mark Fest.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mississippi Museum of Art has acquired Fountainhead — the only Frank Lloyd Wright house in the state on Glenway Drive in Fondren — and will restore the 71-year-old home to offer guided tours in 2027 after Jackson City Council approved a special exception for community events.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Jackson Fire Department celebrated a new union contract, a nearly $1 million Pierce Engine Pumper, and a $250,000-plus renovation of Fire Station 24 in West Jackson — city leaders and union officials said these upgrades boost firefighter morale — as the work aims to improve community safety.  FOX 40
  • My Brother’s Keeper is questioning State Auditor Shad White’s report that criticized its spending on programs for HIV and food insecurity — CEO Dr. June Gipson said she was never contacted and has provided all receipts to support her claims.  FOX 40

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Renaissance Phase 3 in Ridgeland is now complete with new stores including La-Z-Boy, PetSmart, Old Navy and T.J. Maxx open near Aldi and Costco along Highland Colony Parkway. Developer Andrew Mattiace said the project required 18 months—6 months of planning and design and 12 months of construction—and he is planning more developments including residential projects to boost the area.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ole Miss jumped to No. 6 in the College Football Playoff Rankings after beating Florida by 10 points on Saturday, and the team remains ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25—adding to the buzz as playoff selections draw near.  FOX 40
