COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A nationally recognized restaurant owner received unanimous approval from the Jackson City Council on Monday to convert the historic Shady Nook in Belhaven into a lunch and meeting space. He plans to open the renovated property in January to preserve a landmark that began as a gas station and store in 1928 — a cherished memory for locals. FOX 40
- ➤ The Foundation for Mississippi History received $1.4 million in donations—$500,000 each from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Phil Hardin Foundation and $200,000 each from two anonymous donors—to fund phase one of the Margaret Ann Crigler Park at the old Welty Library site. The park will have a green space, play area, walking trail, splashpad and pavilion and will open at Mississippi Makers Fest in 2027, boosting downtown's revival and support for the Two Mississippi Museums. - ➤ Belhaven residents will soon have a new barbecue spot when chain restaurant Boondocks opens Saturday, November 22. Owner Kody McCraney said the Lucedale-based chain is excited to bring back familiar flavors (taking the place of the former Lou's Full-Serv) in Jackson. WAPT
- ➤ Jack’s Family Restaurant celebrated its 65th anniversary by serving $1 hamburgers on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until closing—customers could buy up to five burgers at the special price. - ➤ Food Depot at West McDowell Road and Terry Road in South Jackson will close in early December, leaving many local shoppers with few nearby grocery options and causing dozens of workers to lose their jobs—residents now worry about finding affordable alternatives. FOX 40
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The local planetarium has been renamed the McNair–Davis Planetarium to honor late astronaut Ronald McNair and will reopen between mid-May and mid-June next year after a major renovation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackson Public Schools began its Supper Meal Program on November 3 to serve a nutritious third meal to students in afterschool enrichment programs. The USDA-funded program runs Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.—offering meals like barbecue chicken wings, fries, fruit and milk at eight sites and may expand as needs grow. - ➤ Gov. Tate Reeves withheld details of Mississippi’s rural health plan expected to secure at least $500 million in federal funds beginning in 2026—he said sensitive technical and budgeting information was kept confidential to protect the competitive process. - ➤ The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced the nominees for the 2025 C Spire Conerly Trophy with Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss as the lead nominee and introduced three new awards— the SWAC Impact Award, Division II/III Excellence Award and the 13th Annual Hull Trophy.
