COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Renters in metro Jackson are living in unsafe homes with cracked walls and falling ceilings that worry families. Attorneys say renters should keep records of repair requests and learn their rights under Mississippi law—this will help protect them if repairs are not made.  WAPT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Federal lawmakers proposed a ban to close a loophole that lets intoxicating hemp products reach consumers, and if approved next November it will force many small hemp businesses to stop selling these items. Hemp sellers like Tyree Keith and Deaundrea Delaney warned the change will cut off a key treatment option for many customers—regulation is needed but the ban would hurt the industry—leaving businesses to adjust.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Freedom Trail marker was unveiled on Farish Street in downtown Jackson on Nov. 14 to honor civil rights attorneys R. Jess Brown, Carsie Hall Sr. and Jack Young Sr. City and state leaders including Mayor John Horhn and Justices Reuben Anderson and Constance Slaughter-Harvey attended the event—paying tribute to their fight against segregation in the 1950s and 1960s.  WAPT
  • A week ago, the National Folk Festival took place in downtown Jackson from Nov. 7 to Nov. 9—featuring over 300 artists in music, dance and crafts—and marked the start of a three-year residency. Crowds from across the state and nation attended the free three-day event.  Mississippi Free Press

  • Teacher of the Year Louise Smith said vouchers and 'choice' schemes risk pulling funds from public schools—this can lead to bigger classes and fewer supplies. She urged lawmakers to fully fund education investments—like early literacy and teacher support—to keep our schools strong.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson families are set to receive full SNAP benefits after the shutdown ended, but the delay deepened food insecurity as many now depend on food drives+pantries with Thanksgiving approaching. Jackson City Councilman Vernon Hartley said families from food deserts have sought help while community efforts continue to support those in need.  WAPT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Officials are still searching for a new title sponsor for the state's PGA tournament weeks after Steven Fisk birdied to win the Sanderson Farms Championship because last year's sponsor ended its lead role. Century Club Charities Executive Director Steve Jent said they are holding talks with the PGA Tour group—hoping to secure a deal that meets marketing goals and supports local charities.  FOX 40
  • In week 12 high school football, Jackson Academy shut out MRA Patriots 35 to 0 (ending an eight-year winning streak) and will face Hartfield Academy in today's state title game. Jackson Prep lost 48 to 21 (in a rematch with Hartfield), marking a day full of high-stakes playoff battles.  FOX 40
