COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in West Jackson are upset about abandoned houses, overgrown yards, and illegal dumping that have troubled the area for over a decade — residents like Louise Moore and Percy Lester have documented the blight on Princeton, St. Charles, and Wacaster streets and urge city officials to act. Moore plans to contact the mayor and a local council representative this week to request a cleanup of the neglected neighborhood.  FOX 40
  • The Two Mississippi Museums in Jackson will host their annual Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 7 at Entergy Mississippi Plaza beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event will feature a performance by the 41st Army band, a moment of silence and veteran recognition by Major General Bobby M.   • Ten restaurants in Mississippi have earned MICHELIN Guide awards—three in the metro area where Elvie’s and Sacred Ground Barbecue received Bib Gourmand marks and Pulito Osteria was named Recommended.   • A Rankin County woman said a towing company in Jackson quoted a free tow after her crash in Flowood but later charged her about $600 when she went to retrieve her car, and she contacted the Attorney General, Better Business Bureau + police about the billing issue.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • A Rankin County woman said that after her crash in Flowood she was told her car would be towed for free—only to be charged over $600 when she went to pick it up from a lot in Jackson. Flowood police are investigating the matter while she has reached out to the Attorney General and other agencies.  WLBT News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi State Treasurer David McRae said his office will send $1.3 million via state-issued checks to roughly 4,700 residents with unclaimed funds; the checks come with a letter from him and are valid for one year—residents can also search online for additional funds.  FOX 40
  • One week after a truck carrying monkeys overturned in Jasper County, Jackson officials are questioning if current rules for transporting research animals are enough—officers noted missing permits and irregular paperwork during their review. Officials will work with wildlife coordinators to address these permit issues and prevent future problems—sparking calls for clearer regulations.  FOX 40
  • Jackson law enforcement agencies, including Capitol Police, Jackson Police, and Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, are planning extra security for the downtown 82nd National Folk Festival, which spans over half a mile with several roads blocked for the three-day event. Chief Bo Luckey said officers will check vehicles & patrol the area to keep attendees safe and manage traffic delays.  FOX 40
