COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local sorority chapter in Jackson hosted a suitcase drive for the unhoused on Sunday as cars lined up outside The Ivy Pointe — the donations will go to Shower Power next month. People can still donate suitcases until Nov. 20 to help those in need.  FOX 40
  • Local businesses & organizations gathered at Belhaven Town Center for the Red Beans and BBQ Festival to raise funds for Stewpot Community Services with food competitions, live music, and public voting for the best dishes. The event also honored the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Mississippi with the People’s Choice Award.  FOX 40
  • Jackson is facing an overwhelming stray animal problem as thousands of dogs and cats roam neighborhoods and the Mississippi Animal Rescue League reported 422 stray dogs have been brought in (with numbers expected to exceed 10,000 later this year). The city is forming a mayor’s Animal Welfare Task Force (Mayor Horhn will announce members next week) to address the issue following the closure of the Jackson Animal Shelter.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson State University is hosting presidential search listening sessions to gather thoughts on the traits needed in its next president. Sessions are scheduled for today in the Senate Chamber at the JSU Student Center and on Tuesday with staff at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., faculty at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., students at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and alumni at 4:00 p.m. —they are live-streamed on the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning website.  WAPT
  • Last weekend, a Northwest Rankin High School band traveled to a competition in Louisiana but saw their contest canceled by bad weather so they performed in the cafeteria instead. Meanwhile, the Madison Central band in Alabama was hit by sprinklers during its show — they played on and won first in their division and third overall.  FOX 40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday, the four-day climate change summit ended at New Horizon Church—activists and local officials met at Tougaloo College to talk about cutting pollution and improving our local environment. Dr. Charlotte Keys and other speakers called for government leaders to work together for a cleaner future.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Human Services announced earlier today that SNAP benefits will not be issued in November due to the federal government shutdown—officials urged recipients to use available benefits now and monitor updates as federal guidance changes.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Ole Miss Rebels beat Oklahoma 34—26 to keep their SEC Championship and College Football Playoff hopes alive. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw for 315 yards and Kewan Lacy scored two rushing touchdowns—setting up their home game against South Carolina next week.  FOX 40
