Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 25th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today demolition began on the abandoned Viola Lake House in West Jackson to clear the way for the Bill and Lillian M. Cooley Center Youth Entrepreneurship and Tech Center—community leaders say the new center will offer walking trails, gardens and a library for local youth— and it will be completed in three years.  FOX 40
  • Residents have seen more stray dogs and cats roaming Jackson neighborhoods as experts report that shelter intakes have already reached record numbers this year. The City of Jackson is forming the mayor’s Animal Welfare Task Force — with members to be announced next week — to address the growing problem.  FOX 40
  • Community members gathered Friday at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial on President Street to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty. Fire Capt. George Horn, retired firefighter John Gillespie, and Mayor John Horhn read the names of the fallen and presented roses to families—recognizing decades of service and sacrifice.  WAPT
  • Families in Jackson are upset with Lakewood Funeral Home's planned Trunk-or-Treat event at the cemetery pavilion—arguing that sacred ground should be kept for quiet remembrance. The funeral home said the event will be held at the pavilion and no graves will be disturbed.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • George Malvaney, a Jackson native from an upper-class family, went to a Ku Klux Klan rally in Tupelo and joined the group while serving in the Navy—he even recruited about 4% of his ship’s crew. After a failed coup on a Caribbean island led to his imprisonment, he said his time in jail helped him change his extremist views.  WLBT News

CULTURE NEWS

  • George Malvaney grew up in Jackson and once joined a Ku Klux Klan rally in Tupelo where he recruited Navy shipmates before taking part in a failed coup in Dominica—he now says his time in prison helped him question those past choices.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi food banks are getting ready for a surge in demand as families worry about SNAP benefits being disrupted due to the ongoing government shutdown. Cassandra Mobley from the Mississippi Food Network said they will adjust plans to help those at risk next month—while MFN serves 430 agencies—adding to the strain during the holiday season.  WAPT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emma Walker, a music student at the University of Southern Mississippi, lost hearing in her left ear earlier this year and had to pay $3,000 (since her private insurance did not cover a hearing aid) out of pocket. Advocates say a failed 2022 bill leaves many Mississippians with similar expenses and hope lawmakers will revisit the proposal in the 2026 session (to help ease these costs).  Mississippi Free Press

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Chapel Ridge apartment complex in Jackson has begun turning things around as new owners work with city officials to fix issues like piled-up garbage, poor management, and $700,000 in unpaid bills that led to a July police sweep. The rental registration manager met with the owners Friday and they plan to add tighter security—gated entry and on-site management—to rebuild trust with residents.  WAPT

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school football Week 9 ended with Tri-County Academy beating Leake Academy 52-18 and Germantown upsetting Madison Central 21-17—Oxford, Lanier, MRA and others also earned decisive wins as local teams improved their records. Several squads will face new opponents in upcoming district battles as the season progresses.  FOX 40
