Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 22nd of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city hosted its first CleanJXN Gateway Beautification Day with over 100 volunteers cleaning six key areas to help revive Jackson—Councilman Kevin Parkinson said this effort is part of a broader plan to keep the capital clean with more events planned in the future.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi Department of Employment Security secured a $5.7M grant to boost shipbuilding skills training for major firms like Ingalls Shipbuilding, Bollinger Shipyards, and United States Marine—this funding is part of an $86M federal program to support workforce development in high-demand sectors. Officials said the grant will help fill 2,500 new positions each year and improve training for current workers in areas such as welding, marine electrical work, and manufacturing.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • Today, work begins to fix one of the zoo's largest leaks as crews from Wicker Construction—removing a large tree and clearing brush around the chimp moat—start repairs to curb high water bills. City Council is set to vote on approving the emergency contract and a new plan for animal veterinary care on Tuesday.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sunday, breast cancer patients and survivors gathered for the 16th Annual Pretty, Pink, and Pampered event to receive hair, makeup, pedicures, and massages that offered a welcome break from treatment challenges. Dr. Shalonda Quinn, the event founder, said the day helped lift spirits — allowing participants to leave feeling renewed.  FOX 40

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Monday, Jackson’s Housing Task Force heard from property owners and insurance officials who said panhandling is turning away new tenants and that rising insurance premiums, interest rates and high maintenance costs are stressing older apartment buildings.
