COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roadie the black kitten was rescued from underneath a car in Jackson when his tail got caught in the fan belt—he lost part of his spine and skin but now has a new owner and is healing at the new Downtown Jackson shelter with full recovery expected in two weeks.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson officials announced Monday that repairs began at the zoo to fix long-standing water leaks—problems that have led to millions in unpaid bills. Wicker Construction focused on repairing one major leak and will address smaller leaks to complete the repairs.  Mississippi Today
  • A mass prayer was held on October 20 at Greenwood Cemetery to protest Medicaid cuts and urge senators to reverse the bill. Organizer Dr. Scott Crawford—leader of Repairers of the Breach—said the protest aimed to spotlight the deadly impact the cuts could have on health care.  WAPT
  • Mayor John Horhn announced last Monday that Jackson formed a 16-member Unhoused Task Force co-chaired by Melvin Stamps & Jill Buckley to design sustainable solutions for homelessness and panhandling, with recommendations due early 2026.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Monday, property managers and insurers told the Housing Task Force that panhandling, rising insurance costs, and higher interest rates made it hard to run apartment buildings in Jackson. Owners urged Mayor Horhn to speed up a panhandling permit ordinance and fix the slow process for getting a privilege license — a change they said could help keep local investors in the city.  FOX 40
