COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jackson held its first CleanJXN Gateway Beautification Day where over 100 volunteers cleaned six key streets—Fortification, High, Pascagoula, Pearl, West Capitol, and Woodrow Wilson—to help revitalize the city. Councilman Kevin Parkinson and community members said the cleanup is just the start of more events planned for the future.  FOX 40
  • Chained pit bulls were left starving at a vacant house in West Jackson until neighbors fed them and Mildred Dover rescued and renamed them Molly and Charlie; the dogs have since found a new home next door. The city’s Animal Control facility has been closed for nearly four years — Mayor John Horhn plans to form an Animal Control Task Force to address the stray animal issue.  FOX 40
  • Dr. Juanita Sims Doty was honored Sunday in Canton for her lifelong commitment to mentoring youth and serving the metro area. The ceremony at In His Steps Ministries awarded her a commemorative gazebo, benches, and markers—while local mayors declared October 19 as Juanita Sims Doty Day.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in North Jackson experienced a water outage Friday when a water main break on Mimosa Drive affected service on Mimosa Drive, Barnes Street — and Crepe Myrtle Drive, and repair crews worked at the scene to restore water.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local breast cancer awareness event is taking place in Jackson to support patients and survivors with information and care. Organizers say the event will offer a space for sharing experiences and finding community support.  WLBT News
  • On Sunday, breast cancer patients and survivors gathered in Jackson for the 16th Annual Pretty, Pink, and Pampered event + free hair and makeup services, pedicures, and massages were provided. Dr. Shalonda Quinn said the event was organized to bring a day of relief + survivor Shinikia Hinton urged women to get regular mammograms for early detection.  FOX 40
  • Casey Jones Water Association has issued a boil water notice for customers in Vaughan due to a water main break—crews are working to repair the line and tests will determine when the water is safe.  WAPT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Week 8 high school football on Friday brought key wins and surprises—MRA won 49—24 over Parklane in the featured game, Jackson Academy beat Madison St. Joseph 55—8, and undefeated Terry Bulldogs lost 28—19 to West Jones. Other matchups ended with decisive scores that set the stage for teams’ upcoming contests.  FOX 40
