COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson said this year's Mississippi State Fair was a success even though about 481,399 people attended from Oct. 2 to Oct. 13, compared to higher numbers in recent years — he added that next year's fair will be bigger and better to boost turnout.  FOX 40
  • Attorneys in Jackson will celebrate National Pro Bono Week this weekend by providing free legal help to those who cannot afford counsel. Alison McMinn of Forman Watkins said local legal service groups have partnered to vet cases and ensure proper representation—covering family and criminal matters.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson will host the 2025 National Folk Festival from November 7 to 9 with over 300 performers on six stages. The free event will open Friday at 6 p.m.—with shows starting by The Campbell Brothers and headliners like Bobby Rush and the Sonic Boom of the South—and will mark the first time Mississippi hosts this century-old festival.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shaniqua Rodgers, a fourth-grade English teacher at Midtown Public Charter School, was honored for the second time with the Alyce Clarke Award for her outstanding teaching — Principal Patrick Edmond said she is one of the highest performing teachers and her students enjoy learning games in her engaging classes.  WAPT
  • The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning board approved a plan to form a Search Advisory Constituency to advise Jackson State University's presidential search after calls for greater transparency following Marcus Thompson's resignation. Cunningham and Commissioner Al Rankins will submit a list before Nov. 20 so the advisory group—made up of up to 15 stakeholders—can offer input during the search process.  Mississippi Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality granted a Title V permit to Drax’s Amite BioEnergy facility in Gloster on Wednesday, reclassifying it as a major source of air pollution. Residents raised concerns about health impacts from noise, smells, and dust — while local officials and company representatives said recent upgrades have improved compliance and safety.  FOX 40

  • High school football week 8 on Friday featured several tough matchups—MRA beat Parklane 49 to 24, Jackson Academy won 55 to 8 over Madison St. Joseph, Oxford edged Germantown 43 to 42 in overtime, and West Jones defeated Terry 28 to 19 while other teams posted key wins in close contests.  WLBT News
  • WLBT and Gray Local Media announced an expanded broadcast reach of New Orleans Pelicans games for the 2025-26 season—DIRECTV streaming, satellite and U-verse customers in Jackson can now watch non-national games on GCSEN. The Pelicans begin their season on October 22 when they play the Grizzlies at 7 p.m., and the game will be simulcast on WLBT 3.3 and GCSEN.  FOX 40
