COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct. 10, the Opportunity Center at Stewpot helped hundreds of unhoused residents in Jackson—offering tents, health checks and other essential services during World Homeless Day. Attendees like Sharday Thomas and Eddie Spann sought the support they needed to work toward stability.  FOX 40
  • Jackson State University held a press conference urging homecoming attendees to drive sober and find safe rides—offering $25 Uber gift cards and breathalyzers to help them get home safely. The university partnered with the Mississippi Office of Highway Safety to stress that both alcohol and drugs can impair driving—prompting every Tiger to pledge a safe ride home.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson nearly met its fundraising goal — now only $125,000 short — for the National Folk Festival after Tuesday’s City Council meeting, with major contributions including $150,000 from Ergon Alliant Corporation, Mayor John Horhn said. The festival will be held November 7—9 downtown and is expected to feature over 300 performers while drawing about 80,000 visitors.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fans and alumni gathered in downtown Jackson on Oct. 11 to watch the Jackson State University homecoming parade, which featured marching bands, dancers, and cheerleaders. The lively event gave out candy and music—energizing the crowd throughout the celebration.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local law enforcement, including Jackson police, Capitol Police and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, are increasing patrols and monitoring parking areas to secure JSU homecoming weekend events—especially at the parade and game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. Officials urge residents to follow parking rules and report any suspicious activity immediately.  FOX 40
  • A legislative study committee heard testimony on biomarker testing at a meeting Thursday in Jackson, where colon cancer survivor Ashleigh Parker and doctor Pierre de Delva explained how the test can personalize treatment for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. The discussion also focused on the need to make testing more affordable — with ACS urging lawmakers to require coverage as 22 states have already done so.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jackson State won its Homecoming game against Alabama State in a late finish at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium—finishing 38-34 after a goal line stand in the final seconds. The Tigers, now 5-1, will travel to Las Vegas for the HBCU Classic against Grambling State—adding one more challenge to their winning season.  WLBT News
