CULTURE NEWS

  • Mayor John Horhn announced that Jackson is within $125,000 of meeting its $1.5 million goal for the National Folk Festival, which will fill downtown from November 7 to 9. He added that local colleges are already involved and more volunteers are needed—calls that aim to finalize event preparations before the festival begins.  WLBT News
  • At Tougaloo College, community members gathered at Woodworth Chapel on Thursday to remember Emmett Till in a panel discussion that focused on his legacy and social justice. The event, part of Founders Week and supported by the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Emmett Till Interpretative Center, urged that future generations learn from our past — a call to keep history alive.  FOX 40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi’s Environmental Quality Permit Board will hold a public hearing on Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. in Jackson to review Drax’s appeal for raising its Gloster plant emissions; a community rally is set for 8 a.m. across the building + local residents say a permit reversal may worsen health risks.  Mississippi Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson State University held a press conference to urge homecoming attendees to drive safely and avoid impaired driving by both alcohol and drugs — the initiative, in partnership with the Mississippi Office of Highway Safety, provided Uber gift cards, breathalyzers, and safe ride guidelines for the weekend.  FOX 40
  • Local leaders are urging Jackson officials to fix the closed Reverend P.J. Williams Bridge because its shutdown has forced drivers onto narrow detour roads that led to accidents. Councilman Kenneth Stokes and Reverend P.J. Williams will address the issue at a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church—pressing city officials to restore safer travel routes.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Jackson, the Mississippi State Board of Health reviewed its priorities by addressing urgent public wellness issues such as high infant mortality (linked to a shortage of OB-GYN care) and rising whooping cough and West Nile cases while operating on a $61 million budget and planning to seek additional funds (including revenue from the Medical Cannabis Program) to support free Breast and Cervical Cancer screenings and ADA parking renovations set for December. The board will meet next on Jan. 14.  FOX 40
  • More than 300,000 Mississippians who get health insurance from the marketplace will pay a lot more in January if Congress does not extend federal subsidies—subsidies that kept costs low until they expire at the end of 2025. Many families may see prices nearly double—a typical family with two children could pay about $3,000 more each year—and might drop their plans if costs become too high.  FOX 40
