- ➤ At the 23rd Annual Beans and Greens Dinner on Oct. 2, community members gathered at the Andrew McQueen, Jr. Civic Center as Jackson Mayor John Horhn gave a keynote address—he urged locals to work together at the grassroots level to boost progress at state and federal levels. - ➤ Jackson Mayor John Horhn will present his first state-of-the-city address on Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the third floor auditorium at the Jackson Convention Complex—he will outline his progress since taking office on July 1, including work on infrastructure, public safety, economic growth, government accountability and community development. - ➤ Mayor John Horhn of Jackson plans to hire a national firm to help search for a new police chief after former Chief Joseph Wade retired in late August—Councilman Kenneth Stokes and others worry the process may delay the appointment. A vote on the proposal is scheduled for Tuesday at City Council. WAPT
- ➤ Jackson City Council passed a nonbinding resolution on Tuesday + urging the federal government to return full management of the water system back to the city, as officials work with federal partners to meet a court order that requires a transition plan by October 2026 after more than three years of federal control. - ➤ Jackson City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to rename a section of Northview Drive as Martin L. Shields Jr. Memorial Way to honor the fallen deputy killed earlier this year in the line of duty. The renaming ordinance, introduced by Ward Seven Councilman Kevin Parkinson, will take effect in 30 days, with a dedication planned to celebrate his legacy. WLBT News
- ➤ Congressman Bennie G. Thompson announced Monday morning that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded two federal grants to boost economic development and youth services in Mississippi. The Jackson Resource Center received $800,000 to support six new businesses and create 25 jobs in Jackson — the Mississippi Children’s Home Society was granted $245,000 to back the Warren County Children’s Shelter. - ➤ Five Senate candidates spoke with students at Tougaloo College during Founder's Week to share their plans for the seat once held by Mayor John Horhn—students learned about different platforms ahead of the Nov. 4 election. Seven candidates are in the race for Senate District 26. WAPT
- ➤ Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin said three days into the government shutdown he remains hopeful the Senate will pass a continuing resolution—unlocking extra operating funds for JXN Water. He noted that if approved, up to $54 million could be available within 60 days while contractors wait for payment. FOX 40
- ➤ Jackson City Council approved an agreement that will have Visit Jackson and the Jackson Convention Complex jointly manage Thalia Mara Hall. Mayor John Horhn said the venue will reopen early 2026 after repairs and improvements, and Rickey Thigpen noted upcoming acts will be announced soon. WAPT
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Jackson City Council approved using the Police Executive Research Forum to help find a new chief after former chief Joseph Wade left the department. Some council members preferred promoting internal candidates—Mayor John Horhn noted that at least two officers are applying for the role to improve safety. FOX 40
- ➤ The Jackson City Council unanimously approved renaming a section of Northview Drive as Deputy Martin Shields Jr.—Memorial Way to honor the local deputy killed on Feb. 23 during a shootout while responding to a domestic disturbance in Terry. Sheriff Tyree Jones said Shields was raised in Jackson and that the renaming is a tribute to his service. WAPT
