  • The Mississippi State Fair had a busy first weekend with thousands enjoying treats like roasted corn, chicken on a stick, and free biscuits — and Jackson State fans showed Tiger pride as Homecoming began. The fair will offer concerts and free admission for active-duty military and first responders before it closes on October 13.  WLBT News

  • European car lovers gathered at the Renaissance Shopping Center in Ridgeland on Saturday to show off cars from Britain, Italy, Germany and other nations. Organizer Mike Marsh said the free event—now in its 18th year—offers a chance for both dedicated fans and curious visitors to enjoy the display.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson Mayor John Horhn announced CleanJXN Gateway Beautification Day to improve key city entrances on Saturday, October 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.—volunteers will clean West Capitol Street, Woodrow Wilson, Fortification, High Street, Pearl and Pascagoula.  WLBT News
  • Mississippi will hold general and special elections on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Jackson voters will choose candidates for state senate contests — including one to fill Mayor John Horhn’s open seat — as well as for a state house seat, circuit court judge and coroner in Hinds County.  WAPT
  • Jackson’s wastewater treatment plants are now managed by Jacobs Solutions as Veolia’s contract ended on September 30—Veolia stated the city still owes them about $7.5 million for five months of work. The firm had managed the Savanna Street, Trahon, and Presidential Hills plants since 2016 and was replaced after officials opted for lower pricing.  FOX 40
  • Jackson officials said during a recent housing task force meeting that about 9,000 renters face potential water shutoffs if landlords do not settle overdue water bills—JXN Water has already sent final notices to four apartment complexes affecting fewer than 1,000 residents, and city leaders are seeking HUD funds to help tenants.  Mississippi Today
  • Jackson water service runs as Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin said the Senate must pass a resolution to unlock $54 million from State Revolving Fund loans for daily operations during the shutdown. He added that if approved, the funds could be available in as little as 60 days (or take up to five months as seen before) while contractors continue their work.  FOX 40
  • Congressman Bennie G. Thompson announced a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation of over $355K that will give $332,009 to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency for 178 HAZMAT trainings and $23,357 to the Public Service Commission to hire an attorney to boost damage prevention efforts—promising to strengthen local emergency response.  FOX 40
