COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson placed second among 249 hospitals in the worldwide Babies With Books Read-A-Thon this past September. Families and staff read nearly 20 books to each baby in the NICU—1,144 sessions took place—while nurse Kristen Blanks said the readings helped the babies grow and bond with their caregivers. FOX 40
- ➤ Pauline Rogers and her husband Frederick, who met in prison, opened the new office of the Reaching and Educating for Community Hope Foundation in downtown Jackson on Sept. 25—expanding reentry programs and transitional housing to help formerly incarcerated people adjust to life outside. The facility is set to offer outreach and support to the community as it builds a second chance for many. Mississippi Free Press
- ➤ The Birds of a Feather Vintage Market Days event is held at the Clyde Muse Center at Hinds Community College in Pearl this weekend and offers vintage items, live music and food trucks. Tickets cost $15 for Friday and $10 for Saturday and Sunday—with free readmission all weekend and free admission for kids under 12. WAPT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 166th Mississippi State Fair began on Thursday with a ribbon cutting and now features 100 vendors, 60 carnival rides, and a preview of America250—tickets are $10 and parking is free as events run until October 13. FOX 40
- ➤ Mississippi Symphony Orchestra musicians have worked without a contract since September 1 and say talks for better pay over a one-year deal with a wage freeze have stalled since March—musicians say low pay makes it hard to cover living costs and to compete with other groups. They hope a new contract will raise wages and keep the orchestra strong in the community. FOX 40

- ➤ Madison County residents voiced alarm over high water bills at a community meeting hosted by the Southern Poverty Law Center last Thursday—CMU later clarified that a 25% increase set for July 1 was misstated, and further meetings will address these concerns. WLBT News
- ➤ Ninety-three new lawyers took their oaths to practice in state courts at the Mississippi Supreme Court in downtown Jackson on Oct 3; judges, law school deans & bar officials offered advice and congratulations. WAPT
- ➤ Mayor John Horhn is expected to introduce an order at the next City Council meeting to contract an executive search forum that will help choose Jackson's new police chief, following community listening sessions on public safety priorities. Former Chief Joseph Wade retired after nearly 30 years plus Sheriff Tyree Jones is now serving as interim chief. WAPT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Mississippi Health Department said that a federal shutdown caused contract workers to be told to stop work and that furloughs may follow if the shutdown lasts—essential services like the Women, Infants and Children’s Nutrition Program will keep running. The department is checking its funding and will notify affected employees if further pay cuts become necessary. Mississippi Today

- ➤ Contractors have begun converting two old office buildings at 2600 Ridgewood Rd.—in North Jackson—into 15 new loft apartments with one- and two-bedroom units. StateStreet Group leads the project and will start pre-leasing before the project finishes by spring to offer high-quality housing to local tenants. FOX 40
