COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mississippi State Fair opens today at 11 a.m. after health inspectors checked every vendor to ensure they follow the same restaurant rules — the 166th fair will run until Monday, Oct. 13 and feature red, white, and blue attractions, a parade with live music, and fireworks to mark the nation's 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Education redesigned its TeachMS.org site— a single source for salary details, job openings and licensure information, and announced new grant funding for a Teacher Residency program to cover tuition and expenses for aspiring elementary and special education teachers.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Exactly three months after Mayor John Horhn took office, Lt. Gov Delbert Hosemann announced that Senate colleagues formed two study committees to boost Jackson's economy—one to promote downtown investment and tourism and one to address housing shortages. The committees will hold hearings in coming months to guide legislative actions for future growth.  Mississippi Today
  • Congressman Bennie Thompson warned that the government shutdown is harming health care access in Mississippi and could force the loss of eight rural hospitals. He noted that Governor Tate Reeves’ refusal to expand Medicaid deepens the crisis—thousands in his 30 underserved counties could face more hardship until a resolution is reached.  WAPT
  • Mississippi’s 21,000 federal workers face uncertainty as a government shutdown starts after lawmakers could not agree on funding—many may see delays in their pay. About 750,000 federal workers nationwide are expected to be furloughed—essential services like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid remain funded.  WAPT
  • The Mississippi Department of Human Services said SNAP benefits are not affected by the federal shutdown today—officials will update if changes occur. The State Department of Health is also watching to ensure that WIC benefits continue without interruption.  WAPT
  • Two new committees created by Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann in the Mississippi Senate will study ways to boost Jackson’s economy and ease its affordable housing shortage - they will meet in the coming months to offer recommendations ahead of the 2026 Legislative Session.  WAPT
  • Jackson’s first Public Works director in two years, Lorenzo Anderson, was confirmed by City Council and will take over on October 6. He will focus on fixing potholes and flooding—key issues that the department must address for safer streets.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • The college gameday forecast for the weekend of Oct. 4 predicts dry conditions and varied temperatures—USM’s Thursday game will start in the mid 70s and cool to the upper 60s, while Mississippi State’s Saturday game in College Station will see warm tailgate weather that cools after kickoff, and JSU’s match in north Alabama will have comfortable mid-80s conditions. Home games for Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. on Saturday are expected to begin with hotter conditions that drop into the 70s by game end.  WAPT
