COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Jackson law enforcement agencies join for the annual National Night Out—promoting community safety and outreach to residents. Officials say the event will feature visible patrols and organized public engagement.  WLBT News
  • Nancy King, owner of Nandy's Candy in Jackson, passed away at 76 from pneumonia on September 30th—she left her daughter Emmie to carry on the shop’s legacy and community spirit for nearly 50 years.  WAPT
  • Jackson’s annual National Night Out was held yesterday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium—bringing together JPD, Capitol Police, and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department for discussions on safer neighborhoods. Law enforcement officials and community leaders said they plan to build stronger partnerships to boost trust between the police and residents.  FOX 40
  • The Brown Place Group Home held its first fundraising gala on Sunday night at Fondren Hall—to raise funds for a new foster home set to open by May. Founder Lakeisha Hardy said the home will serve foster children—and include a fresh produce cafe to address local food deserts.  FOX 40

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Mississippi Lottery will launch three new scratch-off games on Tuesday, October 7 — $1 Lucky Numbers, $3 BINGO Night and $5 Cash Money — that offer players a chance to win cash prizes up to $100,000 and multiply winnings with special symbols. Each game gives a different prize structure with top prizes of $5,000, $30,000 and $100,000 in the $1, $3 and $5 games respectively.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, the American Heart Association hosted its second annual STEM Goes Red event at the Mississippi Children’s Museum where Jackson Public Schools’ middle school girls learned about STEM careers through hands-on activities from Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, Nissan, Ergon, and Regions Foundation—local experts like Dr. Analise Douglas shared their experiences to inspire future career choices in STEM.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Michael Guest, Sen. Roger Wicker and Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith are asking the EPA to allot $54 million to JXN Water for operations and maintenance over the next year and a half—JXN Water is facing a funding shortfall after nearly exhausting its set-aside funds and planning a 12% rate hike.  WAPT
  • The DOJ argued that Jackson State University should not prompt a court ruling on its plan to install water storage tanks—since the university is not a party and the project would reclassify its system as a public utility. The agency urged that the Mississippi State Department of Health decide if the proposal meets state and federal law after the campus experienced eight outages since early 2024.  WLBT News
  • Law enforcement agencies will work together at the Mississippi State Fair, which will run Oct. 2 through Oct. 13, to enforce new security measures including only clear bags of limited size and a ban on ski masks — anyone 17 or younger must be with an adult after 6 p.m. on weekdays and weekends.  WAPT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 115 pertussis cases this year and confirmed its first death in over 12 years when an infant under 2 months died. State Health Officer Dr. Daniel Edney urged adults to update their vaccine boosters so they do not expose vulnerable babies to the treatable bacterial infection — a concern as cases continue to rise.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a win by a margin of 24 to 19 over LSU on Saturday, the Ole Miss Rebels jumped nine spots to fourth in the AP Top 25 rankings. The team is 5 to 0 overall and 3 to 0 in SEC play— they will host Washington State on October 11th at 11:45 a.m.  FOX 40
