CRIME NEWS

  • Mississippi Delta Community College lifted its lockdown after campus police apprehended a suspect following reports of an armed individual on the Moorhead campus—authorities confirmed no injuries were reported after the suspect was taken into custody in Belzoni.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mississippi Department of Education has redesigned the TeachMS.org website to help prospective teachers find salary details, job openings, and licensure steps, and it has announced a grant for the Mississippi Teacher Residency program — covering tuition and expenses for those seeking elementary or special education licensure — to ease the teacher shortage.  FOX 40
  • On Monday, JPS middle school girls attended STEM Goes Red at the Mississippi Children's Museum to learn about STEM careers. Partners such as Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, Nissan, Ergon, and Regions Foundation hosted hands-on activities while experts like Dr. Analise Douglas explained how to start in science and math.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi Today reporter Alex Rozier updated Jackson residents on the third-party water utility system that requested a rate hike and is now in federal court, and he noted the system must prove it can withstand future natural disasters—raising concerns about water service.  Mississippi Today
  • Jackson began a nationwide search for a new police chief after the long-serving officer retired, and many residents worry that hiring someone from outside may not understand local needs. Community forums were held to let locals share that the new leader should be a Mississippi law enforcement officer—someone who truly knows Jackson.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Tony Little, owner of Blossom Apartments LLC, filed a counterclaim against JXN Water and its manager Ted Henifin on Friday after the utility shut off water for nonpayment, which disrupted service for 30 families during extreme heat. His suit alleges negligence, breach of contract, and failure to address defective meter readings while seeking compensation for damages.  WLBT News
  • Today at 2 p.m. the Jackson City Council will confirm Mayor John Horhn’s nominees for more than a dozen department heads + five Municipal Court judges while no nominations are presented for Parks Director or Police Chief. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones continues serving as interim Police Chief and plans to step down when a permanent chief is chosen.  WLBT News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A baby under 2 months died from whooping cough as the Mississippi State Department of Health reported 115 cases since January 1 and three pediatric deaths since 2008—showing that the illness is rising sharply among infants who cannot be vaccinated.  WAPT
