COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The old Popeye’s building on Capitol Street in West Jackson was torn down after residents petitioned for its removal, but they say work must continue to clear other blighted properties on Bon Air and Prentiss Streets—cases pending demolition.  FOX 40

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Entergy Mississippi will upgrade its power grid over the next five years with its Superpower Mississippi project — installing new utility poles, trimming dead trees, and using sensors for self-healing networks to cut outages by 50% in 45 counties. State officials confirmed customer bills will not change as the cost is covered by revenue from new projects like Amazon facilities and an extra $300 million has been secured.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi Auditor Shad White gave details on a report released on Monday—questioning spending by three Jackson-area nonprofits including the Juanita Sims Doty Foundation, My Brother’s Keeper and 100 Black Men of Jackson. He said high administrative costs and poor recordkeeping raised concerns about taxpayer dollars and submitted the report to the Attorney General’s Office.  FOX 40
  • Jackson City Council approved a tax break for Forest Park Apartments II LP in Northwest Jackson on Tuesday after the complex spent over $8 million on facility improvements—this change will save the owners $53,600 each year for five years amid some council concerns.  WLBT News
  • Ward Three Councilman Kenneth Stokes has proposed renaming Pearl Street from I-55 to North State Street and a local bridge to honor late Mayor Frank Melton—who served from 2005 to 2009 and died on primary election day. The ordinance will be voted on at the October 21 meeting.  FOX 40
  • A new group of 65 Mississippi National Guard members began training Tuesday at Camp Shelby and will replace the current guardsmen in Washington, D.C.—they are scheduled to arrive by the end of the week.  FOX 40
  • Jackson Mayor John Horhn traveled to Washington on Wednesday — asking Congress for a $54 million reallocation of state revolving funds to cover JXN Water's operations and maintenance costs. Interim Manager Ted Henifin had warned that the utility had run out of technical assistance funds, leaving it short on cash for bills.  WLBT News
  • Mississippi State Department of Health hosted a ceremony Tuesday, Sept. 23 in Jackson to dedicate a memorial honoring 23 emergency medical services workers who died in the line of duty—State Health Officer Dan Edney and Gov. Tate Reeves attended and took part in a bell ceremony during the observance.  SuperTalk Mississippi Media
  • At the Mississippi Trade Mart in Jackson, a technology symposium took place on Wednesday where speakers discussed cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and state government plans. Dr. Kollin Napier and Stephanie Hedgepeth stressed that educating people for public service is vital—networking and vendor displays added to the day’s events.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Patients have complained about scarring and other problems after facial plastic surgeries performed by Dr. Adair Blackledge in Jackson. One patient from Biloxi said a stitch ruptured after a rhinoplasty—leaving a dimple—and six others reported similar issues while Blackledge defended his work and his record.  Mississippi Today
