Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The old Popeye’s building in West Jackson was torn down after local residents raised long-standing concerns about the vacant eyesore—neighbors say more unsafe, burned houses in the area still need prompt removal. The city said one property is set for demolition while further inspections continue to address remaining issues.  FOX 40
  • The Mississippi State Fair—scheduled to open on Oct. 2—will have busy fairgrounds with rides, concession stands like Malone's Taffy, and new attractions such as Military Day and Disability Friendly Day as it takes part in the Great American Fair initiative to celebrate 250 years of America.  WAPT
  • A thousand people marched from Mill Street to the Mississippi Capitol to call for an end to violence in Jackson and to push for stronger, community-driven leadership. Organizers noted a drop in homicides from 92 last year to 51 this year and said the march united locals in a firm call for change.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson State University reached its highest ranking in nine years yesterday—climbing to No. 15 among HBCUs and tying at No. 65 in social mobility—and showed progress in retention rates, graduation outcomes and faculty resources, which supports its mission for low-income and first-generation students.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson is holding five public forums to gather residents' input on the search for a new police chief following former chief Joseph Wade's resignation in August — he left due to job stress. Forums will be held at Forest Hill High School on Sept 23, Westside Community Center today, Jackson Medical Mall on Sept 29, First Presbyterian Church on Sept 30, and Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church on Oct 1, and the City asks people to share their views via an online survey.  Mississippi Free Press
  • Jackson Mayor John Horhn said—the tiny home village project for homeless residents is on hold because changes in the plan mean the city will not use block grant money, and officials will search for new funds to meet their commitment from the Federal Home Loan Bank. The project was approved years ago, but planning changes have prompted the city to rebid the funding.  WLBT News
  • The Mississippi Department of Health on Tuesday morning dedicated a new memorial at its Central Campus to honor fallen EMS professionals. Gov. Tate Reeves and other local leaders spoke at the ceremony—where a Bible verse from 2 Chronicles 15:7 is etched in stone alongside the names of 22 EMTs killed in the line of duty.  WAPT

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday morning, Attorney General Lynn Fitch delivered fentanyl harm prevention kits and emergency overdose boxes to Mayor Horhn and city officials at Jackson City Hall to help fight the opioid crisis. Mayor Horhn noted that the supplies, including naloxone and test strips, already helped lower overdose deaths by 39% while Interim Chief RaSean Thomas described them as crucial for first responders.  FOX 40
