Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 22nd of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Thousand‐Man March started on Mill Street and ended at the Mississippi Capitol as community members gathered outside 440 Jackson Nightclub to demand stronger leadership and an end to violence — organizers noted that although homicides have dropped from 92 last year to 51 so far this year, peace marches will continue until the toll reaches zero.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • Marshand Crisler — a former Hinds County sheriff and Jackson City Councilman convicted last November for taking $9,500 in campaign money for ammunition — filed an appeal on September 12 arguing that government investigators set him up for accepting bribes. His lawyer, Joseph Holloman, said the case showed no clear proof that Crisler was eager to take the money and is asking for his conviction to be overturned.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today in Byram, Terry and Raymond high schools kicked off Unity Bowl Week with a pep rally at 5:30 p.m. on Hinds Parkway—students from both schools performed drum lines, cheerleading, and leadership acts to celebrate school pride. The week will end with a football game between the Raymond Rangers and Terry Bulldogs on Friday at Terry High School.  WAPT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over the weekend, some Jackson residents experienced brown water from their faucets due to manganese in the reservoir, though the water remains safe to drink. JXN Water said it will adjust treatment—flushing the system through fire hydrants—and water should run clear in seven to ten days.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, judicial candidate Bridgette Morgan filed an appeal after a lower court dismissed her challenge to election results that narrowly favored Yemi Kings—she argues absentee ballots were mishandled under state law. The case, dismissed after a three-day hearing in July by Special Circuit Judge Lamar Pickard, will now be reviewed by the state Supreme Court.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vaccine advisers in Jackson have reviewed parts of the childhood vaccine schedule as they met over the last two days and voted that children under 4 should not get the combined MMRV shot—separating the chickenpox vaccine from the MMR shot. Local doctors worry that these changes may lead some parents to delay or refuse vaccines.  FOX 40
  • Cyclists in the ninth Cancer Patient Bike Ride will reach Jackson at noon today — Nucor Steel employees ride the four-day route from New Orleans to Gertrude C. Ford Hope Lodge to raise $225,000 for the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research and patient support services.  WAPT
  • Vaccine advisers met in the past two days to review the childhood vaccine schedule and recommended that children under 4 receive a separate chickenpox shot instead of the combined MMRV vaccine—officials say this move may lead to changes in future vaccination plans.  FOX 40

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school football week 4 delivered close games as McComb edged Brookhaven 18—16 to remain unbeaten while MRA won 49—21 over Jackson Prep and Callaway beat Terry 16—6; wins from Jackson Academy, Warren Central, Madison Central, Germantown and Ridgeland added to the excitement.
