CRIME NEWS

  • Former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick will pay for an independent autopsy for Delta State freshman Trey Reed—found hanging from a tree on Sept. 15 and ruled a suicide by Cleveland Police—as his family plans a second autopsy amid ongoing questions about his death.  WAPT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourth graders from across Mississippi gathered last Thursday at the Mississippi Children’s Museum to learn coding and robotics in the C Spire C3 Jr. Coding Challenge — they used artificial intelligence from a partnership with Amazon Web Services to complete student-designed obstacle courses.  FOX 40
  • Jackson State University and Jackson Public Schools announced a dual enrollment program for high school juniors and seniors on Wednesday—allowing eligible students to earn transferable college credits while still in school and shorten the time needed to earn a degree.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Tate Reeves said Mississippi's nonfarm employment reached a record high in August with over 1.2 million jobs. He also announced that AVAIO Digital is constructing a $6 billion data center campus at the East Metropolitan Center Business and Industrial Park in Brandon — the project is the third-largest economic development effort in state history.  WAPT
  • Officials said a major leak at the Jackson Zoological Park’s chimpanzee exhibit—ongoing since 2017—has led to the moat valve being turned off and the moat drained while the chimps are moved to a temporary enclosure; engineers will review repair plans next week to help manage the issue.  WLBT News

  • A Mississippi state agency announced it will offer free Narcan kits to residents to help reverse opioid overdoses. The kits will be available today at local health centers—providing a crucial resource amid rising overdose concerns.  WLBT News
