EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ NAACP President Derrick Johnson spoke at Tougaloo College on Wednesday where he addressed threats against historically Black colleges and noted that several schools—like Alabama State and Hampton—were placed on lockdown last Thursday. He warned that the volatile political climate over the past 10 months risks moving society backward and urged protection of young people’s right to quality education. WAPT

- ➤ HBCUs will share a $500 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education, and local schools like Tougaloo College and Jackson State University plan to use the funds to improve buildings, hire more teachers, and build new partnerships (local officials say the money supports both current projects and future growth). - ➤ JXN Water is increasing water shutoffs for nonpayment amid a cash flow crisis as Interim Manager Ted Henifin reported 52 customers were disconnected this morning—possibly reaching 250 by today. - ➤ A federal judge ordered JXN Water to create a new billing reporting system—allowing customers to report missing bills for 60 or more days and receive amnesty for reported usage before December 31—while Jackson must provide property records within 21 days. - ➤ Mississippi cancer advocates met with lawmakers in Washington, DC including Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker to urge support for cancer research and prevention before a Sept. 30 budget deadline.
