  • Mayhem Sports Ventures held a ribbon-cutting at the YMCA in Flowood on Liberty Road Tuesday morning—launching a mentoring program that used football to teach young men discipline, teamwork and character.   • Local leaders are working to fix safety and beautify shopping areas near big box stores amid worries that TJ Maxx and Old Navy might move as new stores open elsewhere. City officials and business owners are sure the cleanup efforts—part of a plan to boost Jackson's economy—will help attract and keep businesses in the city.  WLBT News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal judge heard evidence from both sides as Rankin County School District argued to end a 60-year desegregation consent decree from a 1967 lawsuit—lawyers said the district has integrated its schools while critics noted ongoing racial disparities. The judge will continue hearing testimony this week and is expected to issue a ruling later.  WAPT

  • Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch appealed a federal judge's decision to block the state law that bans DEI programs in public schools and universities. The appeal was filed Tuesday — the case will go before a three-judge panel on the 5th Circuit Court.  Mississippi Today
  • Federal receiver Wendell France Jr. will take control of the Raymond Detention Center on October 1 to run daily operations after a federal judge placed it in receivership due to poor conditions—staff shortages remain a major challenge.  FOX 40
  • Local officials face increased threats as Princeton University’s Bridging Divides Initiative data shows incidents rising from 375 in 2022 to nearly 690 in 2023—over 300 incidents have been reported so far in 2025, and experts warn the violence may discourage local political participation.  WAPT
