CRIME NEWS

  • State officials presented evidence in the payroll fraud trial of former Richland mayor Pat Sullivan involving falsified timesheets that show he claimed extra work hours while he was at conferences—testimony continues today.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson State University alumnus Tramell Tillman won an Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles—making him the first Black actor honored in this category.  FOX 40
  • Today, thousands gathered on the Mississippi State Capitol lawn for the 11th annual Mississippi Book Festival. The event featured over 50 panel discussions—led by local authors—and offered live music and food trucks to engage the community.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tougaloo College will host its 2025 Provost’s Convocation on Wednesday, September 17 at Historic Woodworth Chapel from 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. where NAACP president Derrick Johnson and attorney Letitia Johnson — a Senate candidate — will speak as they highlight the college’s legacy of leadership.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hinds County officials are starting poll manager training today at the Hinds County Election Commission on Commerce Street for registered voters ahead of the November special election. Training sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. — Saturday sessions will occur at 10 a.m. from Sept. 20 through Oct. 18.  WAPT
  • JXN Water is holding sanitation fees to cover a 6.4 million dollar water bill after manager Ted Henifin emailed interim official Pieter Teeuwissen. City council members discussed decoupling sanitation billing & a hearing on the matter may take place soon.  FOX 40
  • A federal receiver will take charge of the Raymond Detention Center on October 1 after Judge Carlton Reeves cited unconstitutional conditions at the facility. Wendell France Jr.—the appointed receiver—will manage daily operations while the county plans to pay $58,128.25 by September 26 for jail monitors.  WLBT News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since 2022, Mississippi has received tens of millions of dollars in opioid settlements — over $124 million in total, with less than $1 million used for addiction help. The investigation spoke with opioid expert Tricia Christensen and found that officials spent only a small part of the funds, raising questions about future spending on treatment.  Mississippi Today
  • Experts warn older residents to avoid heavy use of certain over-the-counter sleep aids as a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that high doses of anticholinergic drugs may increase the risk of dementia. Geriatric doctors advise using these medications only for the short term and suggest natural sleep habits to help protect brain health.  FOX 40
