- ➤ Yesterday, Jackson residents joined a free Sunday bike ride organized by Downtown Jackson Partners that offered educational stops and treats from local restaurants; another ride is planned for Oct. 5. WAPT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Thousands of readers gathered on the Capitol lawn today for the 11th annual Mississippi Book Festival — the event featured over 50 panel discussions with local authors and an Authors Alley with more than 100 self-published writers. Live music and food trucks boosted the day's offerings for the community. FOX 40
- ➤ Tramell Tillman, a Jackson State University alum and star of Severance, just became the first Black actor to win an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series — he graduated in 2008 and his work spans more than two decades. The university congratulated him on social media Sunday night. WAPT
- ➤ JSU alumnus Tramell Tillman won an Emmy at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles for his role in Severance — he became the first Black actor to win in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. FOX 40
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Jackson City Council approved a $337 million budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year beginning October 1—this plan gives a 3% raise for the city's lowest-paid workers starting in January while leaving the final decision to Mayor Horhn—and also provides $1.5 million for new Public Works equipment. - ➤ JXN Water is withholding sanitation fees to cover the city's $6.4M water bill, interim Chief Administrative Officer Pieter Teeuwissen told City Council. He said an email from Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin prompted discussions on decoupling billing — a move that may lead to further hearings. FOX 40
- ➤ Interim Chief Administrative Officer Pieter Teeuwissen said the zoo’s chimpanzee exhibit will be taken offline to fix a major water leak by draining the moat and moving the chimps, and the repairs—estimated at between $400,000 and $1,000,000—may be funded by a $40 million bond issue. FOX 40

- ➤ St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson is hosting its third annual Babies with Books NICU Read-A-Thon to help families bond and boost babies’ brain development by using books from Lela’s Library. The event runs until September 18 — after the hospital placed eighth out of 250 hospitals last year. FOX 40
