CULTURE NEWS

  • The New York Times named The Mayflower Cafe one of America's Top 50 restaurants of 2025—celebrating its 90-year history and the restaurant's revival in August. Former mayor Kane Ditto and his partners are keeping the classic Jackson dining spot alive by preserving much of the original menu and tradition.  Mississippi Today
  • Organizers at the Mississippi Book Festival are making final preparations for today’s event on the South Steps of the State Capitol from 9 a.m.—5 p.m. Panels with guest speakers including reporter Jerry Mitchell, Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson, and Holly Lange will celebrate books at this eleventh annual literary lawn party.  WAPT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Finance leaders and mayors from several major Deep South cities will attend DELTA FEST next week in Jackson at the Environmental Learning Center—where they will map a 10-year strategy for economic prosperity. The free three-day event, organized by HOPE Enterprise Corporation and Yancey Consulting, will offer sessions on ownership, entrepreneurship and community infrastructure—beginning with an opening ceremony on Sept. 16.  Mississippi Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson City Council approved a $337 million budget for the next fiscal year starting October 1. The plan gives the city's lowest-paid workers a 3% raise beginning in January—pending the mayor’s selection—and adds $1.5 million for public works equipment.  WLBT News
  • Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin warned that JXN Water’s finances are at risk after a federal judge blocked a rate increase and unpaid invoices totaling $30 million have left the city short to meet a bond payment due in December. City officials and state leaders are set to meet—raising concerns that the water system could default on its upcoming debt.  FOX 40
  • JXN Water withheld sanitation fees from Jackson after the city’s $6.4 million water bill came due amid lagging collections and dwindling federal funds, officials said. Interim Chief Administrative Officer Pieter Teeuwissen explained he discussed the issue at a recent City Council meeting and plans to speak with the mayor about decoupling trash billing—details remain under review.  WLBT News
  • JXN Water is withholding sanitation fees from Jackson to cover a $6.4M water bill — interim Chief Administrative Officer Pieter Teeuwissen said at a City Council meeting. He added that officials will soon discuss changes to billing that may lead to a hearing before Judge Wingate.  FOX 40
  • City officials plan to repair a major water leak at Jackson Zoo by taking the chimpanzee exhibit offline — the chimps will be moved to a new enclosure so the moat can be drained and fixed. Interim Chief Administrative Officer Pieter Teeuwissen said the repair could cost between $400,000 and $1 million and may be funded with part of the city's $40 million bond.  FOX 40

  • St. Dominic Hospital is hosting its third annual Babies with Books NICU Read-A-Thon during NICU awareness month to boost bonding between parents and their newborns — the event provides books from Lela’s Library and runs until September 18.  FOX 40
  • Medical officials warned fans that triple-digit heat and excessive alcohol at Jackson State University's game today may quickly lead to medical emergencies — concerns rise as the stadium’s U-shaped design intensifies heat absorption. American Medical Response urges fans to hydrate, eat before drinking, and watch for early signs of overheating such as dizziness and nausea.  WAPT
