- ➤ Habitat for Humanity is working to renew the Broadmoor neighborhood by buying and building homes to remove blight. It began building a house on Cedarhurst Drive during the Women’s Build Project and will build six more houses in the next year—helping families buy homes with a 30-year zero-interest mortgage. FOX 40
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said several shootings over Labor Day weekend in Jackson were not random—three people were killed and seven were shot during incidents at a birthday party, a Chevron station, and a gas station, and police are investigating gang ties and possible retaliation. - ➤ The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics arrested Racquel Taylor and Tyrone Samuel in Jackson on Aug. 7 when agents executed a search warrant at a home on South Crownpointe Drive—Taylor was found with 100 lbs of meth while agents also seized 1,000 doses of counterfeit Oxycodone, 2 lbs of marijuana, a rifle, a stolen Ford Bronco, and a GMC Yukon as the investigation continues with more arrests expected. - ➤ Two people were arrested in Jackson after police recovered about 100 pounds of meth on August 7 and August 12, along with marijuana, counterfeit pills, a rifle, and a stolen vehicle — additional arrests are expected. WLBT News
- ➤ Jackson police arrested 18-year-old Camerious Huff on Tuesday after Reginald Brown was fatally shot Sunday night in the 5800 block of Ridgewood Road, and Huff is charged with murder while being denied bond. FOX 40
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Jackson's Public Works Department is asking the City Council for a $16.5 million budget that includes $531,360 to hire several in-house engineers and raise custodians' wages. The plan will boost efficiency by shifting funds from an outside consultant—raising custodians’ wages to $12.46 an hour—before seeking further resources. WLBT News
- ➤ On August 29, the Jackson Fire Department presented its budget request to repair 21 fire stations using a part of the Modernization Tax revenue — officials said they will seek additional federal funds to cover building repairs and upgrades while the city asks for $25.9 million with a budget decision due by September 15. The proposal allocates money for salaries, vehicle upkeep, and uniforms to support the department's 278 staff and extensive operations. WLBT News

- ➤ Jackson Mayor John Horhn declared September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Tuesday at the State Capital Rotunda to urge early prostate cancer screenings given the high risk among local men. A Community Awareness Forum will be held at MS Baptist Hospital on September 25 and churches will mark Prostate Cancer Sunday on September 28 — early detection can save lives. WAPT
- ➤ American Medical Response will launch the new 911 Nurse Navigation system in October—designed to screen less serious calls and reduce unnecessary ambulance dispatches and emergency room visits while connecting callers with a trained nurse. This system will help Central Mississippians receive the right health care at the right time. WAPT
