Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 16 WAPT reporters and anchors shared their memories of Hurricane Katrina, saying how they kept the news going from Jackson after WDSU evacuated from New Orleans. The special 'Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years Later' aired at 8 p.m. on Aug. 29 and showed how the storm changed lives and united the community.  WAPT

CRIME NEWS

  • A man wanted in two homicides in Rankin County was arrested early Friday at a hotel in Brandon after a witness recognized him on local news (Matthew Brian Kidd, 35) and a recovered weapon led authorities to charge him (two murders, two counts of home invasion, and weapon possession).  FOX 40
  • A woman was found dead near a homeless encampment in Jackson on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the 6000 block of I-55 North near Beasley Road—police said homicide detectives, the Mobile Crime Unit, and the Hinds County Interim Coroner responded, with preliminary investigations showing no signs of blunt trauma while her identity remains unreleased.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today marks the 70th anniversary of Emmett Till's murder as a .45 caliber pistol shown by FBI records is now on display at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson — it was donated in June so visitors can study this key moment of history.  FOX 40
  • Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama reflected on Hurricane Katrina’s 20th anniversary on August 29, with communities remembering the nearly 240 lives lost in Mississippi and over 1,800 in total. Gov. Tate Reeves, the National Guard and other state leaders visited the Gulf Coast on Friday to proclaim Katrina Remembrance Day — WAPT shared survival stories that evening.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new lawsuit filed last week by the Jackson NAACP Branch and others alleges that state officials purposely limited ARPA funds for Jackson’s water infrastructure, leaving the city with a failing system and rising water rates. The suit claims extra requirements forced Jackson to deposit its $35.6 million matching grant in a state-controlled fund (Christopher Wells, Liz Welch, and David McRae), a rule not applied to other municipalities.  FOX 40
  • Former Gov. Haley Barbour recalled on August 29th how Hurricane Katrina devastated Mississippi 20 years ago and said that bipartisan efforts spurred fast recovery, though challenges like debris removal and housing for displaced residents remain—he expects the rebuilding to continue until the coast is fully restored.  WAPT
