CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run that struck 76-year-old Leon Buggs near the busy intersection of Interstate 220 and Highway 80 on Sunday evening—Buggs sustained severe injuries including two broken legs, a broken hip, a fractured spine, a removed spleen and a damaged lung while his family prayed for his full recovery.  WLBT News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders approved the plan to demolish more than a dozen abandoned homes and properties and will begin work in South Jackson to address city blight—aiming to improve neighborhood safety and appearance.  WAPT
  • At Tuesday’s council meeting, Mayor John Horhn said part of the $40M bond will go to repair Thalia Mara Hall and pay for street repairs—with work like replacing elevators and removing asbestos delaying the hall’s reopening until after next year.  FOX 40
  • Jackson Mayor John Horhn and interim police chief Sheriff Tyree Jones met at the Capital City Revitalization Select Committee meeting to talk about plans to fight crime—reduce blight, boost workforce training, attract business from Amazon, and help those with mental health and housing needs.  FOX 40
  • City and state leaders met Wednesday at the State Capitol to discuss plans to improve Jackson’s infrastructure and address funding and policy issues — Mayor John Horhn said more funding will help fix potholes and other challenges, and more meetings will be held later in the year.  WAPT
  • Mississippi fire departments are worried about new PERS changes that will require new firefighters to work 35 years before they get full retirement benefits in March 2026—raising fears of more injury, death, and PTSD; Lamar County fire coordinator Kyle Hill said the rule may deter new recruits—while a state senator defended the overhaul as a fix for an underfunded system.  FOX 40
  • Governor Tate Reeves proclaimed tomorrow as Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Day to mark 20 years since the storm hit the Gulf Coast. The proclamation will include a statewide moment of silence at 8:29 a.m.—with the Mississippi National Guard and other agencies hosting a remembrance ceremony.  FOX 40
