Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 27th of August.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones will serve as interim Jackson police chief beginning Sept. 5 after Chief Joseph Wade retires; he said he will manage both agencies by relying on trusted staff (he spent 20 years with the JPD) and does not seek a permanent role.  WAPT
  • At today's Jackson city council meeting, leaders planned an animal control task force to address the nearly four-year closure of the city's shelter and discussed reopening Thalia Mara Hall, which will be delayed until January due to plumbing issues and asbestos. A Memorandum of Understanding with Visit Jackson and Convention Center Commission was approved by a 5—2 vote.  WLBT News
  • Mayor John Horhn said a portion of a $40M bond will pay for fixes at Thalia Mara Hall—repairs like new elevators, asbestos abatement, and fountain restoration—and the building will reopen early next year after the work is done. City officials added that the bond locks a 4.79% interest rate and some funds may also support paving as part of ongoing road resurfacing projects.  WLBT News
