ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fatal crash in Sunflower County killed 33-year-old Martez Duncan when his Hyundai Elantra collided with a Ram 1500 driven by Lakeland Clark, who was hospitalized, while a passenger named John Gordon was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center—troopers are investigating the cause.  WAPT
  • An 18-wheeler crashed off I-20 near Cannon Nissan Friday evening when it carried two adults and two small children; bystanders pulled the family from the truck before first responders arrived and no fatalities were reported.  WAPT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jackson Municipal Airport Authority held a ribbon cutting today for Skyport Aviation at Hawkins Field Airport after the company invested $4 million to upgrade the facility. Skyport — already operating in Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania — will serve as the new Field Base Operator to expand travel options for metro business travelers.  FOX 40
  • After 55 years in operation, Mississippi’s oldest cigar shop expands its business by moving to a new, larger space on Lakeland Drive—Owner Jon David Cole said the building will be ready for customers by Christmas with a grand opening scheduled for January.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation issued a Silver Alert for a missing, at-risk Jackson man—Elery Leo Jones aged 60 who was last seen on Aug. 19 at about 11 a.m. on the 2100 block of Monaco Street—and his family said his medical condition may impair his judgment; anyone with information should call the Jackson Police Department or 9-1-1.  FOX 40
  • A two-vehicle crash on Aug. 23 left sisters Loretta Steele, who died, and Ora Steele in serious condition when one vehicle ran through a stop sign and t-boned their car at the Dry Grove Road — Lebanon Pine Grove Road intersection.  WLBT News
  • Nearly 600 cases of food stamp theft were reported in Jackson over the past three weeks—Taylor Purviance said her $975 in benefits were used in stores in Pennsylvania—officials warned that stolen benefits will not be replaced and urged clients to change their PINs regularly.  FOX 40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reservoir officials warned that the Corps’ proposed changes to the Pearl River flood control plan are risky since reducing discharges and raising levels at the Ross Barnett Reservoir could lead to a spillway failure—jeopardizing Jackson’s water supply and affecting local industry. Adam Choate sent a letter on August 11 detailing his concerns that these modifications may also make downstream repairs much harder.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 23, Tougaloo College hosted the annual Black Men’s Health Equity Conference — the event focused on mental and physical health challenges for African American men in Mississippi. Award-winning journalist Ronald Martin delivered the keynote and urged attendees to spread the word to help address rising suicide rates.  FOX 40
  • The Black Men’s Health Equity Conference hosted by the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health took place on August 23 at Tougaloo College, where experts addressed mental and physical health challenges for African American men. Award-winning journalist Ronald Martin highlighted rising suicide rates and stressed the need for broader community outreach—calling for lasting improvements in health awareness.  FOX 40
