CRIME NEWS

  • Over the past three weeks, about 600 residents had their food stamps stolen in Jackson and East Mississippi as thieves used card skimmers and phishing scams, and the state Department of Human Services advised residents to change their PIN numbers often (since stolen benefits will not be replaced).  FOX 40
  • SNAP benefit theft continues in Jackson as local authorities track the misuse of benefits. JFD explained the impact of recent fires in abandoned homes—local officials are checking the situation closely.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson State University is now searching for a new president after Dr. Marcus L. Thompson resigned in May. This marks the fourth leadership change in ten years—board members said they will balance transparency and confidentiality as they choose a new leader.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 23, Tougaloo College hosted the annual Black Men’s Health Equity Conference to address mental and physical challenges affecting African American men—keynote speaker Ronald Martin highlighted rising suicide rates and urged attendees to share their insights for future change. The event aimed to promote a healthier future for the community.  FOX 40
  • The Mississippi State Department of Health declared a public health emergency on Thursday after data showed an infant mortality rate of 9.7 deaths per 1,000 live births—the highest in over a decade—and announced plans to improve prenatal care, standardize obstetrics systems, expand community health worker programs, and educate families on safe sleep practices. Officials say these measures aim to change the trend that has seen 3,527 infant deaths since 2014.  FOX 40
  • Yesterday, the Obesity Action Coalition held its Your Weight Matters event in Jackson—offering free sessions on nutrition, obesity science, treatment options and stress management. Program organizer Michelle Vicari said Mississippi was picked because it has high obesity rates and attendees plan to share these health tools with their families.  WAPT
