CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes said he will bring new rules to help stop gun violence after a weekend shooting at Club Metro that killed Damieo Milton and hurt two people, and after another shooting on Aug. 11 hurt eight people — a Stop the Violence rally is set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Freedom Corner. - ➤ Jackson police charged William Strong with murder and other crimes on Wednesday for a shooting at a Shell gas station on Robinson Street that killed 30-year-old Shawn Crenshaw, a father of three, on August 1—a second arrest following earlier charges against Corey McLaughlin on August 8. - ➤ A Rankin County mother reported that nearly $1,000 in SNAP benefits was stolen earlier this month when her card was used in over a dozen stores in Pennsylvania—leaving her without funds meant to feed her children. State officials advise victims to change their PIN and monitor their EBT accounts closely, as stolen benefits will not be reimbursed. WLBT News

- ➤ Jackson Public Schools delivered backpacks, uniforms, and school supplies to families at Blossom Apartments on Woodbine Street in South Jackson on August 13 to help students affected by water shutoffs and evictions. The McKinney-Vento program registered roughly 15 children and coordinated further support—ensuring students remain enrolled as the crisis deepens. Mississippi Free Press

- ➤ Jackson is demolishing the old Regency Hotel—an eyesore near Interstate 55—so the Agriculture office and MDFA can turn the space into a fairgrounds parking lot and green area, as Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson said it will remove a dangerous sight. The parking lot will be finished by mid-December while other fairgrounds improvements are also underway. WAPT
- ➤ A federal court ruling means Mississippi must redraw its state Supreme Court district lines after a 2022 lawsuit argued the current lines lower Black voting power. Senate Minority Leader Derrick Simmons and civil rights advocates say the change could help the court look more like the state’s people — the state may still appeal while two justices could soon leave the bench. - ➤ A federal judge ordered JXN Water and the Tracewood owners to settle a $910K water bill dispute by next Friday—if they fail to agree, he will rule on the matter. The ruling comes after days of testimony on billing errors and payment plans for the North Jackson apartment complex. FOX 40
- ➤ Jackson Mayor John Horhn said at a housing task force meeting Monday that at least 20 families in south Jackson were forced to leave after JXN Water cut service because a landlord did not pay the water bill—he said the city will propose measures to the Legislature to hold negligent landlords accountable as water issues continue.
