CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson man Shonta Richmond—charged with robbing a bank—is set to go on trial on September 1 for a fatal DUI crash in 2022 that killed a near-19-year-old woman, and his trial may be delayed because of the extra charges.  WAPT

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new mural at Jackson State University honors leaders from the civil rights movement and key figures in the school’s history. JSU alumnus Christopher Windfield created the artwork that shows the Six Triple Eight—a group of Black women—and figures like Malcolm X and Cesar Chavez to inspire students and the community.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled yesterday that Mississippi must redraw its Supreme Court electoral map because the current design splits the historic Delta region and weakens Black voting power—prompting the legislature to set new district lines after a lawsuit filed in April 2022.  Mississippi Free Press
  • The new Jackson/Hinds Library System leader said reopening three closed branches will cost millions—over $2 million for the downtown Eudora Welty site and additional $1.3 million and $788,000 for the Richard Wright and Charles Tisdale branches, respectively. These estimates do not include rental fees or building costs—expenses that city officials must still address as plans move forward.  WLBT News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA issued a warning that Great Value frozen shrimp sold at Walmart may contain Cesium-137— a radioactive substance detected by Customs at US ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah and Miami. Shoppers who bought shrimp with lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1, or 8005539-1 should dispose of them immediately.  WAPT
  • Health experts in Jackson are on alert as high syphilis rates have raised concerns for pregnant women and newborns—data from 2023 showed Mississippi ranking among the highest in primary and congenital syphilis. The State Department of Health created a task force in July 2024 and launched an online resource to promote regular testing and timely prenatal care.  FOX 40
