  • Stewpot Community Services volunteers delivered boxes and packing tape on Friday to residents at Blossom Apartments to help them move out before water is shut off again. Some residents have already relocated—others are still preparing to leave.  FOX 40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Jackson officials are planning safety upgrades along I-55 using a $19.9 million federal grant after a series of pedestrian crashes that included two fatalities and a critical injury near the Lakeland Drive exit—the improvements will add ADA-compliant sidewalks, marked crossings, push-button signals, better lighting and median fencing with work expected to take six years.  WAPT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mississippi author Greg Iles died Friday at 65 after a long fight with multiple myeloma—he wrote 17 novels and had battled the illness since 1996.  Mississippi Today
  • Organizers are preparing for the HBCU Labor Day Classic: Battle of the Bands, which will be held on August 31 at Veterans Memorial Stadium—gates open at 5 p.m., the Parade of Bands begins at 5:30 p.m., and the competition starts at 6 p.m. The event will feature 10 top HBCU band programs and includes pre-event activities such as a charity golf tournament, a mixer, a comedy show with Rickey Smiley, and an All White Party.  WAPT

  • Owners of Tracewood Apartments asked federal court for an injunction to stop JXN Water from cutting off water due to disputed bills and unpaid charges, filing the case on August 12 and having a status conference with Judge Wingate. The action aims to keep water on to avoid forcing residents to vacate — which could lead to immediate public health risks and financial losses.  WLBT News
  • Owners of Tracewood Apartments in North Jackson filed an injunction in federal court against JXN Water to block a water shutoff over disputed bills totaling $334,000—residents face possible hazards if services are cut without resolving billing inconsistencies.  FOX 40

  • A new survey from the Mississippi State Department of Health found that obesity—rising healthcare costs, gun violence and proposed Medicaid cuts that could force some nursing homes to close—are top concerns for Mississippi families.
