CRIME NEWS

  • Dr. Mehul Dixit, a former UMMC pediatric nephrologist whose license was suspended after a 2023 arrest, was indicted Aug 11 by a Hinds County grand jury on 13 counts of gratification of lust of a vulnerable person and 12 counts of sexual battery involving a vulnerable person during clinical visits from 2013 to 2023— the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office is seeking information to support the investigation.  WAPT
  • Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade is considering requiring city permits for house parties after two shootouts in South Jackson left homes and cars riddled with bullets—he said the measure would use city resources to curb violence and needs Jackson City Council approval.  WAPT
  • Mary Mitchell said her car was shot at while leaving church on Country Club Drive on Sunday afternoon—Jackson Police are investigating and have issued a warrant for 25-year-old Ladavia Scott for drive by shooting and other charges.  FOX 40

  • On July 23, JXN Water disconnected water at Blossom Apartments in south Jackson, leaving 20 families without service and with orders to move out in five days—housing advocates say this may be a practice run for more shutoffs as officials work to improve transparency.  Mississippi Today
  • After months without a full commission, Jackson City Council approved Mayor John Horhn's nominations, reappointing Onetta Whitely and naming new members Dr. Ronald K. Moore and attorney Peyton Prospere to serve six-year terms—ensuring all civil service positions are now filled.  FOX 40
  • Governor Tate Reeves said downtown Jackson is being revitalized through major investments from the Capitol Complex Improvement District—developers are buying buildings and new businesses will move in soon. He added that these changes may bring a significant economic boost to the area.  WAPT
  • Siemens Corporation filed an objection on Monday to a federal judge’s subpoena—requesting records on how Jackson spent nearly $90 million from a settlement over a failed water billing system upgrade. The firm said the documents do not relate to the city’s Clean Water Act claims and the judge is reviewing how the funds were used.  FOX 40
  • On Tuesday, the Jackson City Council amended the city’s code to strengthen illegal dumping rules — the new ordinance allows the police to seize vehicles used in dumping and mandates a minimum of 32 days in jail, and it went into effect immediately.  FOX 40
