  • Residents at Blossom Apartments in Jackson called on Interim Third-Party Manager Ted Henifin to restore water service after it was shut off for nonpayment of a bill exceeding $400,000 — the owner must pay the full amount before service returns. Mayor John Horhn said about 20 tenants remain and Stewpot Community Services will host an in-person session Tuesday for relocation help.  FOX 40
  • A local community activist, Danyelle Holmes, called on Judge Wingate to investigate negligent landlords at Blossom Apartments as water was shut off for nonpayment and tenants suffered from unsafe living conditions—such as mold and a lack of on-site management. The owners owe more than $408,000 in past-due bills, and Hinds County has sent a notice for back taxes amid ongoing legal scrutiny.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • Jackson police charged 17-year-old Mason Bennett with three counts of aggravated assault after three people were shot on July 26 at (12:10 a.m.) on the 1300 block of Wiggins Road; he also faces charges for machine gun possession, auto burglary, shooting in an occupied dwelling, and another count of aggravated assault.  WLBT News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FCC Commissioner Olivia Trusty met with stakeholders on August 5 to discuss plans to boost broadband access in Jackson—she explained that removing permitting obstacles will encourage private investment. The FCC also will support workforce development and upgrade emergency alert systems to help more residents connect.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • RJ Tanner, a farm resident in George County, received a Neuralink brain implant in April that now lets him control a computer with his thoughts—he regained his independence after years of paralysis. He plans to launch a micro-grow operation and enroll in cybersecurity courses while using his new skills to rebuild his life.  Mississippi Free Press
