- ➤ A popular community get-together was held on August 7 at The Block at Fondren from 5-9 p.m.—the event featured live music, games, and drink and food specials with local businesses such as The Station, The Pearl, Highball Lanes, and Fondren Yard taking part. WAPT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Heather Forsythe — who traveled 160 miles daily from Brandon to MSU’s Meridian campus — was named the inaugural Outstanding Graduate at MSU’s first MSN graduation ceremony on Aug. 7. She will start work in the intensive care unit at Ochsner Rush Health. FOX 40
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Jackson Mayor John Horhn said about 20 tenants still live at Blossom Apartments two weeks after the water was cut off for nonpayment—12 of the tenants have Region Six vouchers while one with a Jackson voucher will soon be moved. The city provides non-potable water daily at 3 p.m. with help from the Fire Department and offers relocation support through Stewpot Community Services as the owner still owes over $400,000. FOX 40
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The FDA denied approval for the drug Elamipretide that helped a Rankin County teen with Barth Syndrome, meaning he and others will lose access by the end of August as production stops due to investor pullout. His family plans to urge lawmakers and may travel to Washington D.C. to protest—saying the decision stems from red tape rather than safety issues. FOX 40
- ➤ Hospitals are closing maternity wards due to financial stress and fewer births—this led to the planned closing of the obstetrics program in Kansas City in early September.
