Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two Jackson firefighters were treated for overheating while battling a house fire on Clearbook Drive Tuesday afternoon, with one firefighter transported to UMMC for observation (the vacant home sustained extensive damage with over half of its structure burned and the cause is under investigation).  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed barricade at a home in the 3600 block of Bill Downing Road in Raymond on Tuesday at 2 p.m.—after negotiators and SWAT were deployed, the scene was declared clear at 8:15 p.m. with MBI and the Coroner requested.  FOX 40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stephen Brown, founder of Briarwood Arts Center, transformed a littered, abandoned property into a creative hub and community recycling center with help from local groups since 2022 — his project now offers free arts programs and holds neighborhood cleanups every other month. He will share his blueprint for fighting blight at volunteer meetings every Tuesday at 6 p.m.  WLBT News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Interim water system manager Ted Henifin said on Tuesday he might resign after U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate refused his plans to raise rates or form a water authority to secure bond funding—he cited unresolved questions over an $89.9 million Siemens settlement. He said the ruling leaves him no way to pay contractors as the system faces a growing budget gap.  FOX 40
  • A federal judge in Jackson issued a temporary restraining order on July 20 to pause enforcement of a law banning diversity programs, but his original order contained errors — listing parties that were not involved and quoting texts that do not match the records — which led attorneys to question if artificial intelligence was used in drafting it. He replaced the order today, and parties will meet on August 5 to argue a preliminary injunction.  FOX 40
  • Mayor John Horhn announced on Tuesday the formation of an Apartment Task Force to review management practices and improve safety in Jackson apartments—responding to issues like disrepair at Chapel Ridge and a water shut-off at Blossom Apartments. The task force will work with the Legal Department, Code Enforcement, and housing experts to gather input from residents and landlords.  FOX 40
