They noted the move may help reduce food deserts in the area.  FOX 40

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 26 at about 12:10 a.m., three people were shot in the 1300 block of Wiggins Road—each was treated and released after non-life-threatening injuries while police ask the public for help identifying the suspects.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • As school starts soon, optometrists in Jackson advise parents to get their children eye exams early to catch vision issues that can affect behavior and grades. They recommend a comprehensive exam for kids as young as four and earlier if there is a family history (lazy eye, crossed eyes, or nearsightedness) and warn that changes can occur quickly.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal district court ruled that Job Corps centers, including the center in Crystal Springs, must remain open after students filed a motion arguing that closing the centers would harm young people—supporting Congress’s effort to provide education and training. The ruling bars the Department of Labor from shutting any of the 99 centers and upholds a program established in 1964 to offer vocational opportunities.  FOX 40
  • The City of Jackson Office of Housing and Community Development held its second public hearing today—residents offered input on federal grants for housing and demolition projects while learning about Community Development Block Grants and HUD funding. Officials stated that comments will be accepted until Aug. 1 and details submitted to HUD by Aug. 15.  FOX 40

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors in Jackson say that artificial intelligence in electronic records is causing errors in diagnosis suggestions—often called zombie codes—that may lead to extra tests and confusion among patients.
