- ➤ Water was illegally turned on at Blossom Apartments after the meter was locked for over $400,000 in unpaid water bills — giving residents about 12 extra hours of water before a contractor locked it again on Thursday — and tenants remain upset over the extreme 110-degree heat and lack of water. - ➤ A Rankin County deputy was injured in a two-vehicle crash while responding to a reported home invasion early Friday at 4 a.m. on Greenfield Circle—when another vehicle entered Hwy 468—and was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in stable condition—officials said. FOX 40
- ➤ Survivors of crime gathered in Jackson to share their stories and learn about local victim support services — national and local groups hosted the event and called for a trauma recovery center to help victims heal. WAPT
- ➤ Hinds County man Jermaine Bradley was charged with new rape and sexual exploitation charges while under house arrest for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl earlier this year—he allegedly shot his victim in the stomach and bond was denied by Jackson Municipal Court. FOX 40
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackson State University will receive $390,000 for a plasmonic systems project starting Aug. 1 and Alcorn State University will receive $398,619 for the ELITE project starting Aug. 15 & both awards, given by the National Science Foundation, are set to boost advanced research and STEM education. Rep. Bennie Thompson said the grants support improvements in research capabilities and undergraduate learning opportunities at the schools. WAPT
