ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A gas line exploded and set off a fire in a North Jackson house — emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene.  WLBT News

CRIME NEWS

  • Capitol Police have identified a person of interest in connection with a shooting that killed two women on July 20 near a nightclub on Wilmington Street — 34-year-old Telisa Holder and 32-year-old Racquel Freeman were shot around 3:30 a.m. after leaving the club, and investigators are searching for the suspect.  WAPT
  • The Jackson Police Department is asking the community to help name suspects seen dumping furniture in two incidents — one on Greenhill Place on July 5 at 7:56 a.m. and another on Kingswood Place on July 12 — and warns that violators will be arrested and prosecuted.  WAPT
  • Jackson Police Department officers responded to a shooting near O’Bannon Drive and Sunset Drive on July 20 and found a 15-year-old Black male who died from a gunshot wound while 19-year-old Tyler White turned himself in and faced a $1 million bond at municipal court on Monday.  FOX 40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson native Amber Johnson Avery launched NextGenEd—an AI platform that guides college graduates in finding career paths—and received a $304,993 NSF grant to fund a year of research with high school and college students. Avery earned her doctorate in computer science from Purdue and left her software engineer job to focus on projects that benefit the local community.  Mississippi Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, temperatures hit the upper 90s and felt like 105 with some areas above 110 while Tuesday night they dropped to the mid-70s. Today, extreme heat warnings are in effect across parts of Mississippi as a low moves in and scattered storms may bring relief—posing a dangerous heat stress risk.  WAPT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge has temporarily paused enforcement of Mississippi's law that bans diversity, equity+inclusion programs from public schools and universities after civil rights groups filed suit on behalf of students, parents and educators. The temporary restraining order lasts for 14 days and both sides will return to court today to seek a longer injunction.  FOX 40
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers updated its flood-control plans for Jackson on July 3 by adding levees to the 'One Lake' proposal, which now could cost up to hundreds of millions more and pass extra tax burdens to locals. Local groups worry that the new features may not address flooding from Pearl River tributaries — public comments on the revised plans are accepted through Aug. 18.  Mississippi Free Press
