Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 14th of July.
Good morning, Jackson.
Dozens filled Jackson Academy’s basketball arena on Saturday as local police officers and firefighters played in the Battle of the Badges tournament to honor fallen Deputy Shields who was killed in February during a domestic violence call in Terry—proceeds from the event were donated to a scholarship fund set up by his foundation.
Families received free school supplies this weekend at New Virden Grove Baptist Church where volunteers handed out notebooks, glue, scissors & folders to help students prepare for the new school year.
Organized by Ward 3 Councilman Kenny Stokes, the church said more giveaways will be held before classes begin.
On July 10, police responded to a fatal pedestrian incident at 4601 I-55 Frontage Road—where a white male pedestrian walking without lights was fatally struck—and the driver of a Chevrolet 2500 remained on scene as investigators continue to probe the case.
The Jackson Police Department said scammers are posing as the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office to call people with false arrest warrants — urging them to wire money with a QR code — and warned that the sheriff’s office would never ask for money in this way.
