- ➤ Residents and Councilman Vernon Hartley said water was shut off at Chapel Ridge Apartments on Raymond Road on Friday, but JXN Water Manager Ted Henifin said water remains on. The complex has been troubled since May when trash piled up after collection stopped - legal action followed when owner Mark Silber was arrested for mortgage fraud - and a public nuisance fine was imposed by the city. - ➤ On July 10, Jackson police responded to a pedestrian fatality at 4601 I-55 Frontage Road at about 12:54 a.m.—the victim, a white male whose name is being withheld until next of kin are notified, was struck while walking in an unlit area and the driver of a Chevrolet 2500 remained on scene as the investigation continues. - ➤ Jackson Public Schools will tighten its cellphone rules after recent bullying and misinformation incidents were discussed at a community meeting on July 10. Under the new policy, a student caught using a phone during class will lose it for 5 days for a first infraction, 10 days for a second infraction & 45 days for a third, with the board set to vote next week and the change to start with the new school year. - ➤ A new LendingTree study shows that in Mississippi, 34.2% of Black homebuyers in Jackson were denied a mortgage compared to 12.5% of all applicants—making the gap the largest in the nation. The report, which used 2022 data, highlights credit history and debt-to-income ratios as the leading reasons for the denials. WAPT

- ➤ Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced on Thursday a $720 million nationwide opioid settlement with eight drug makers that may give the state up to $6,351,265 to help address the crisis.
