ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A multi-vehicle crash on I-220 near Watkins Drive at about 2 a.m. on Monday left one woman, identified as Mikayla Smith, dead and injured her 8-year-old son who was taken to a local hospital. FOX 40
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two men were arrested for murder in Jackson after LaJarvis Ruffin was fatally shot on June 19 in the 5600 block of Shaw Road — Grejuan Allen faces charges for murder, armed robbery and house burglary with a $1.6 million bond while Jederrion Walton faces a murder charge with a $1 million bond. - ➤ Superintendents Earl Joe Nelson of Leake County and Mario D. Willis of Hollandale were indicted on federal charges — they are accused of conspiring to misuse school funds for unrendered consulting services from November 2021 until at least June 2023 — along with a consultant who allegedly received over $250,000 for similar contracts. - ➤ Supervisors fear roads and bridges will remain unsafe because lawmakers did not approve Special Projects funding + District 2 Supervisor Tony Smith said 160 rural roads are in disrepair. County officials are now working with the Office of State Aid Road Construction + some lawmakers warn that without new funds the county may have to increase taxes or pursue a road bond. FOX 40
